Luciendo llamativas rayas verticales negras y amarillas en el t\u00f3rax que recuerdan a una camiseta de f\u00fatbol retro, esta colorida visitante de los prados es un aut\u00e9ntico deleite para la fotograf\u00eda. A pesar de pertenecer a la familia de las moscas cernidoras, esta especie no pasa mucho tiempo suspendida en el aire. En su lugar, vuela con un estilo lento y pausado, prefiriendo pasear por las hojas o tomar el sol en los claros. Cuando descansa tranquilamente, \u00a1incluso emite un zumbido suave y constante que suena sospechosamente a ronquidos! Mientras que en la mayor\u00eda de estas moscas los ojos de los machos se juntan en la parte superior de la cabeza, la mosca del sol rompe las reglas: tanto machos como hembras mantienen sus ojos separados. Sus larvas acu\u00e1ticas, conocidas como &#8220;gusanos de cola de rata&#8221;, viven en lodo org\u00e1nico y usan una larga cola telesc\u00f3pica a modo de tubo de buceo para respirar. Al llegar a la edad adulta, se alejan del agua para alimentarse del n\u00e9ctar de hiedras, arbustos y flores silvestres.
