Measuring a mere 3.5 to 5.5 millimeters long, this fascinating dance fly is instantly recognizable by its distinct hunchbacked frame, fiery red eyes, and unusually thick back legs studded with sharp bristles designed to snatch prey mid-air. Flitting through sunlit woodland edges and hedgerows from June to September, adults act as fierce predators targeting smaller flying insects. Beneath the surface, their soil-dwelling larvae play a crucial cleanup role by breaking down organic decay and hunting micro-invertebrates. This tiny fly recently hit a major scientific milestone when researchers sequenced its complete chromosome-level genome for the Darwin Tree of Life Project\u2014marking the very first time an entire genome was mapped for the dance flies family!
