Measuring 5 to 10 millimeters long, its sharp, elongated head and ridged body give it a distinct profile that sets it apart from typical rounded shield bugs. Dressed in pale straw hues with fine brown camouflage stripes running down its body, this bug is a master of blending into dry grasses and wild grain fields. Using a needle-sharp beak, adults feed on ripening grass seeds throughout the summer. To survive harsh northern winters, adults hibernate deep inside dense grass tussocks or under leaf litter, emerging in spring to mate. If threatened, they use a classic stink bug defense mechanism—releasing a pungent smell from specialized glands to deter hungry predators! By an extraordinary stroke of photographic luck, I encountered this handsome bug near Akalla, Sweden, just one hour before spotting the tiny golden parasite fly (Cistogaster globosa) that relies exclusively on this exact bug species to raise its young!

Shaped like a traditional pointed clerical hat, the bishop’s mitre shield
