Dressed in a glossy black chest and a slender abdomen decorated with vivid yellow diamonds and triangles, this delicate insect is a true meadow gem. While males sport ultra-thin bodies with distinctive diamond-patterned spots, females have broader bellies with triangular markings. Unlike many hover flies that require blistering summer heat to get moving, these resilient fliers thrive in dappled shade, woodland edges, and chilly temperatures from early spring all the way into November! While adults sip flower nectar and munch on grass pollen, their night-hunting larvae hide in grass tussocks, preying on tiny aphids and midges under the cover of darkness. I encountered this tiny fly with its massive, hypnotizing eyes on a large meadow near Akalla, Sweden. Capturing a clear shot in the blazing full sun was a real challenge\u2014this energetic little speedster refused to stay still for even a
