Measuring 10 to 15 millimeters long, females feature a prominent needle-like structure extending from their tail. Far from being a stinging weapon, this is a specialized egg-laying tool used exclusively to secure the next generation! These wasps are nomadic, solitary guardians rather than colony dwellers. Females track down butterfly and moth caterpillars or pupae, injecting an egg inside so the emerging larva can feed safely within its host. To locate hidden prey under leaves or bark, females perform a fascinating dance\u2014drumming their antennae rhythmically against plant stems to feel for tiny vibrations! Once mature, the adult wasps feed peacefully on pollen and sweet nectar, particularly favoring umbrella-shaped flower clusters. I\u2019ve encountered these stunning wasps multiple times in meadows and forests around Akalla, Sweden. Watching their energetic antennal dances as they explore foliage is always a thrill, though their non-stop motion makes snapping a sharp photo a real test of
