Originally native to Italy, this fascinating arachnid expanded rapidly across Europe over recent decades, becoming a common sight in towns and cities. Unlike true spiders, harvestmen produce no silk or venom, making them completely harmless to humans! Males grow up to 6 millimeters with vibrant reddish-orange bodies and miniature horn-like structures on their jaws, while larger females (up to 8 millimeters) feature a lighter orange-brown tone with a dark, saddle-shaped pattern on their backs. Using their extra-long second pair of legs like sensitive antennae, they feel their way around while searching for small insects and decaying organic matter from June all the way into December. I was lucky to spot this striking long-legged wanderer in two very different settings around Barkarby, Sweden\u2014first in a bustling city park, and later along the quiet, grassy edge of a large lake!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Striding across sunlit brick walls on impossibly long legs, Canestrini’s harvestman (Opilio canestrinii) is a master urban traveler.
