Widespread across Europe, these flies play a vital role in natural pest control, keeping populations of small, bothersome insects in check. I stumbled upon this particular specimen during a visit to the botanical garden in Athens. Perched dramatically on a textured branch, it was entirely preoccupied with feeding on a common housefly, allowing me to approach closely.
