Forget sitting around waiting for food\u2014these spiders are active, high-speed predators. Thanks to their specialized build, they can effortlessly skate across the water&#8217;s surface to ambush prey, or patiently lurk on lakeside vegetation to snatch passing insects and even small vertebrates. True to their family name, motherhood is a big deal here: when it\u2019s time to hatch, the female constructs a delicate silk nursery web in the nearby foliage, tucks her egg sac safely inside, and stands guard like a fierce bouncer until her spiderlings are ready to venture out. I crossed paths with this striking individual deep in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador, capturing it just as it was finishing off a small
