Despite their minute size, they play a vital ecological role as decomposers, breaking down organic matter to fuel nutrient cycling. Within this family, the genus <em>Homoneura<\/em> is exceptionally diverse, boasting over 700 species globally. While their orange-brown bodies, red eyes, and small stature often cause them to be mistaken for standard fruit flies (<em>Drosophila<\/em>), Homoneura can be distinguished by their intricate, spotted wing patterns and two prominent, backward-facing bristles above each eye. As larvae, they thrive on the forest floor, quietly decomposing leaf litter.
