Conocidas por sus colores vivos y alas parcialmente transparentes, a menudo imitan a las avispas venenosas y dependen de defensas qu\u00edmicas especializadas para disuadir a los depredadores. Los machos se alimentan de ciertas plantas, como el hinojo silvestre, para obtener alcaloides pirrolizid\u00ednicos, compuestos que los protegen de los ataques. Durante el cortejo, el macho transfiere algunas de estas sustancias qu\u00edmicas a la hembra, brind\u00e1ndoles a ella y a sus huevos una capa adicional de defensa.
