While most issid planthoppers possess reduced or shortened wings, <em>Dracela<\/em> species are distinguished by retaining fully developed, functional forewings and hindwings. Using a beak-like rostrum equipped with needle-thin stylets, these sap-feeders target the phloem of dense rainforest undergrowth and vines. To survive in their humid environment, <em>Dracela<\/em> nymphs secrete specialized white wax filaments from abdominal glands. This powdery coating deters predators with an unpalatable taste while protecting the young insects from drying out.
