Distribuidas por todo el mundo en h\u00e1bitats templados y tropicales, la mayor\u00eda son maestras de la emboscada y se alimentan estrictamente de presas vivas. O bien se camuflan y permanecen completamente inm\u00f3viles esperando el momento para atacar, o acechan a sus v\u00edctimas con movimientos lentos y sigilosos. Curiosamente, el intestino anterior de algunas especies se extiende a lo largo de todo su cuerpo, lo que les permite almacenar alimento para digerirlo m\u00e1s tarde; una gran ventaja evolutiva para un insecto que se alimenta de forma intermitente. Me top\u00e9 con una mantis adulta de abdomen notablemente grande, perteneciente probablemente a la subtribu Acontistina, dos veces en el mismo lugar exacto dentro del bosque protegido &#8220;La Perla&#8221;, en la provincia ecuatoriana de Santo Domingo. Lo asombroso es que estos encuentros ocurrieron con exactamente un a\u00f1o de diferencia: el \u00faltimo d\u00eda de julio, tanto en 2024 como en 2025. Aunque una sola mantis adulta rara vez vive lo suficiente como para abarcar dos a\u00f1os distintos, fue incre\u00edble ver a generaciones consecutivas de la misma especie reclamando exactamente el
