Descrita originalmente como <em>Pentatoma polita<\/em> en 1825 por los entom\u00f3logos Am\u00e9d\u00e9e Lepeletier y Jean Guillaume Audinet-Serville, pas\u00f3 por varias reclasificaciones antes de asignarse al g\u00e9nero <em>Pygoda<\/em>. Se distingue de sus parientes del g\u00e9nero <em>Edessa<\/em> por los \u00e1ngulos agudos de su pronoto y por detalles anat\u00f3micos espec\u00edficos. Como tipica chinche de escudo, cuenta con un cuerpo ancho en forma de escudo y un marcado escutelo triangular. Al sentirse amenazada, sus gl\u00e1ndulas metator\u00e1cicas expulsan un c\u00f3ctel qu\u00edmico penetrante y aceitoso, cuyo olor suele describirse como una mezcla de cilantro concentrado, azufre quemado y vegetales en descomposici\u00f3n. Encontr\u00e9 esta impresionante chinche en un bonito parque de Tena, Ecuador.
