While it looks quite distinct from its cousins, it shares the same diet, feeding on nutrient-rich plant sap. Its brilliant crimson body is a classic evolutionary strategy to deter predators\u2014a visual shout of &#8220;I&#8217;m toxic, don&#8217;t eat me!&#8221; This striking warning coloration is powered by specialized chemical pigments, such as ommochromes and carotenoids, stored right within the insect&#8217;s exoskeleton. When I first spotted this vibrant creature while exploring the &#8220;La Perla&#8221; protected rainforest in Ecuador, its fluttery, colorful presence completely fooled me; I originally mistook it for a tiny butterfly or moth.
