These highly elusive insects measure a mere 5 to 7 millimeters in length and are native to the dense rainforests of Central and South America. What makes this find so special is how rare they are in the scientific world\u2014the entire <em>Canopidae<\/em> family contains only six known species. They remain largely unstudied, though experts believe they feed entirely on fungi. I encountered this specific individual during my very first photography excursion to the Amazon rainforest in Yasun\u00ed National Park, Ecuador. Looking through the lens, I was convinced I was shooting a tiny, glossy beetle.
