Instead of chewing their food, they use a sharp, straw-like beak to sip plant juices or insect fluids. Many true bugs, such as stink bugs and shield bugs, carry built-in chemical weapons\u2014releasing a smelly spray to ward off hungry birds and predators. Unlike butterflies that undergo a complete transformation inside a cocoon, young true bugs simply hatch as mini-versions of adults, shedding their hard outer skins multiple times as they grow. I encountered this striking 1.5-cm nymph while exploring Nanegalito, an Ecuadorian village located just a short bus ride from Quito.
