Ampliamente distribuida por la Eurasia occidental, desde el Mediterr\u00e1neo hasta Asia Central, este grupo de abejas se conoce com\u00fanmente como &#8220;abejas de surco&#8221; debido a una hendidura muy caracter\u00edstica en el extremo posterior del abdomen de las hembras.\u00a0 Mientras que las hembras suelen ser de color oscuro y bastante discretas, los machos destacan por lucir llamativas franjas de tonos rojizos en la parte superior de su abdomen. Bajo tierra, las madres trabajan incansablemente cavando t\u00faneles y creando peque\u00f1as cunas subterr\u00e1neas donde depositan bolitas de polen y n\u00e9ctar para alimentar a sus larvas.
