Native to Asia and the Middle East, this voracious pest feeds almost exclusively on lilies and fritillaries. When adult <em>Lilioceris<\/em> beetles are disturbed or threatened, they practice thanatosis (playing dead). They will immediately drop off the plant, land on their backs in the soil, and lay completely still. The larvae coat themselves in their own sticky black feces, to escape the attention of predators.
