While these beetles are found globally, the Neotropical species thrive in the humid, lush edges of tropical agricultural fields. To survive, their soft-bodied larvae construct a &#8220;fecal shield&#8221;\u2014a specialized, slimy casing made of their own excrement carried directly on their backs. This portable, foul-tasting shield acts as a brilliant camouflage matrix to deter predatory ants and wasps, while simultaneously preventing their delicate bodies from drying out under the intense sun.
