It is primarily native to East Asia, including China and Japan (particularly the Ryukyu Islands). While the adults chew large holes directly through the foliage of <em>Moraceae<\/em> plants like fig trees (<em>Ficus<\/em> species), their larvae are famous leaf-skeletonizers. Their life cycle is remarkably fast: females lay eggs in tight clusters, and upon hatching, the larvae feed voraciously on leaves for roughly 9 to 15 days. Once mature, they burrow into the upper layers of the soil to pupate in underground chambers for about 12 to 15 days before finally emerging as adults.
