There is a clear reason why they thrive in untouched, primeval forests but are far less common in commercial timberlands managed for wood production: they rely on an abundance of old, decaying wood. As natural recyclers, these beetles help maintain forest health. By consuming fungi growing on decaying timber, they break down tough organic matter and return vital nutrients to the soil where they can be absorbed by growing trees. Furthermore, by feeding on these fruiting bodies, they actively help disperse fungal spores throughout the ecosystem, keeping the decomposition process perfectly balanced.
