Mientras que la mayor\u00eda de las mariquitas son veneradas como depredadoras que devoran pulgones, las <em>Epilachna<\/em> son notorias plagas agr\u00edcolas que esqueletizan las hojas de cultivos como la calabaza, el frijol, la papa y el tomate. Equipadas con mand\u00edbulas robustas y dentadas, perfectamente adaptadas para raspar y masticar el tejido vegetal, desgastan la parte inferior y blanda de las hojas justo entre las nervaduras. En lugar de consumir la hoja entera, dejan atr\u00e1s un esqueleto transparente y distintivo que parece encaje. Sus larvas son igualmente llamativas. Mientras que las larvas de mariquita t\u00edpicas parecen diminutos caimanes de piel lisa, las larvas de <em>Epilachna<\/em> est\u00e1n cubiertas por hileras de espinas gruesas y ramificadas. Esta armadura puntiaguda act\u00faa como un feroz disuasorio contra los depredadores. Adem\u00e1s, cuando se sienten amenazados, tanto las pupas como los adultos pueden exudar gotas aceitosas y de mal sabor a trav\u00e9s de sus pelos glandulares, una defensa altamente efectiva contra enemigos como las hormigas.
