Most species are dedicated &#8220;tunnelers&#8221; that burrow directly beneath or beside dung piles, transporting organic matter down into vertical shafts to pack their brood chambers. Within these subterranean nurseries, pairs often divide the labor: males typically haul food down while females construct the nest chambers. Though primarily tropical, members of this resilient genus have adapted to diverse habitats\u2014from humid lowland jungles to dry oak forests\u2014with some high-altitude species even giving up flight entirely.
