Al igual que las orugas, sus larvas construyen intrincadas armaduras port\u00e1tiles utilizando seda y materiales locales como arena, ramitas y hojas. Al ondular sus abd\u00f3menes dentro de estos estuches tubulares, las larvas crean una corriente continua de agua fresca y oxigenada a trav\u00e9s de sus branquias, lo que les permite sobrevivir incluso en estanques estancados. Debido a que son muy sensibles a la contaminaci\u00f3n y a los bajos niveles de ox\u00edgeno, su presencia es un indicador confiable de una excelente calidad del agua y de un ecosistema pr\u00f3spero. Como adultos, se asemejan a polillas de colores apagados; sin embargo, a diferencia de algunos de sus primos de vida m\u00e1s corta, utilizan piezas bucales especializadas para beber n\u00e9ctar y agua para mantenerse.
