With over 3,000 species globally, these tropical forest dwellers hold the title for the longest insects on Earth. To trick predators, they perfectly mimic twigs, even swaying rhythmically to copy a branch moving in the wind. Their biology is just as flexible as their behavior. If a predator catches a leg, they can discard it and grow a new one. Furthermore, females possess the ability to reproduce asexually. Through virgin birth, their unfertilized eggs hatch into perfect mini-clones of the mother. I was lucky enough to spot one of these cute masters of disguise during a peaceful walk in the city park of Puyo. Because the region is a gateway to the Amazon, it\u2019s teeming with hidden wildlife.
