Las poblaciones est\u00e1n tan abrumadoramente compuestas por hembras que a lo largo de la historia solo se han documentado unos 10 machos. Adem\u00e1s, estudios gen\u00e9ticos revelan que cuando un raro macho intenta aparearse, no transmite esperma funcional, haciendo del acto un simple tr\u00e1mite biol\u00f3gico. A pesar de no poder volar, han logrado colonizar grandes distancias. Sus resistentes huevos son capaces de atravesar intactos el sistema digestivo de las aves, us\u00e1ndolas como transporte hacia nuevos territorios. Asimismo, los huevos pueden entrar en una doble diapausa embrionaria para sobrevivir tanto al calor extremo del verano como al fr\u00edo invernal antes de eclosionar.
