Forget sitting around waiting for lunch to tumble into a web; these guys are active, high-speed predators that chase down their targets using sheer velocity and spectacular vision. Sporting eight eyes arranged in three rows, they feature two massive central eyes designed for sharp targeting. Their smaller eyes contain a reflective layer called a tapetum lucidum, which makes them flash like tiny diamonds when caught in a flashlight beam at night. When they aren’t sprinting after insects, they are lurking near hidden underground burrows, waiting to ambush anything that walks by. But their real claim to fame is their dedication to motherhood: females drag their silk egg sacs everywhere, attached directly to their spinnerets. Once the spiderlings hatch, they hitch a ride by climbing onto their mother’s back, crowding her abdomen for weeks like a tiny, living minivan. Despite their intimidating speed and heavy-built frame, these strongmen are actually quite shy and harmless to humans.
