Adults boast uniquely ovoid, highly convex bodies built like miniature fortresses. To protect themselves, they feature deep indentations (fossae) and specialized grooves that allow them to completely tuck away their legs and antennae flat against their body. Like all click beetles, they possess a fascinating click-mechanism\u2014a rigid peg on the prosternum that snaps into a corresponding groove beneath the chest. This release of tension violently launches them into the air, allowing them to flip right-side up or escape predators in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile, their robust, heavily armored larvae can spend several years developing beneath the bark of decaying logs, feeding on rotting wood and preying on other wood-boring insects. I crossed paths with this intriguing beetle in the dense foliage of the La Perla protected forest in July 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The genus Lissomus belongs to the
