They earned their title from their erratic, low-to-the-ground, and blindingly fast flight patterns. Thanks to their plump, muscular thoraxes, some species can rocket through the air at speeds up to 30 km/h! Evolutionarily speaking, skippers are the ultimate middle ground between butterflies and moths. While they sport the classic clubbed antennae of butterflies, theirs end in quirky, backward-pointing hooks. When resting, they love to blend traits, often holding their forewings and hindwings at completely different angles. As caterpillars, their survival tactics get delightfully bizarre. For instance, the larvae of the silver-spotted skipper possess an “anal comb”—a specialized biological catapult used to forcefully blast their feces up to 38 body lengths away so predators can’t sniff out their leafy hideouts! If an enemy gets too close, they can also puke up a pungent green chemical shield. To top it all off, some adult skippers are notorious “nectar thieves,” using their long proboscises to steal sweetness from complex flowers without ever touching the pollen parts. I crossed paths with this stealthy brown skipper in Nanegalito, a little village tucked away near Quito, Ecuador.

Say hello to the skipper butterflies (family: Hesperiidae)—a fascinating, worldwide group of insects that absolutely live up to their name.
