Unlike most of its relatives that die off when the cold hits, this resilient insect overwinters as an adult, taking flight on unusually mild winter or early spring days to exploit the very first blossoms of the year. Interestingly, they are also environmental shape-shifters: individuals born in the chilly spring sport much darker bodies, while summer generations are distinctly lighter with vibrant yellow spots. To stay safe, adults rely on Batesian mimicry, flashing bright, wasp-like warning colors to terrify predators, even though they lack a stinger and are completely harmless. While the adults peacefully sip nectar, their larvae are voracious ground hunters, consuming vast quantities of aphids on shrubs and deciduous trees. These hoverflies are also powerful endurance athletes known for mass seasonal migrations, which can cause local populations to boom overnight. During my bicycle tour along the eastern coast of Sweden in June 2026, I crossed paths with these stunning nomads during my breaks at the forest edges, capturing some of the finest photos of my entire trip.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Meet the spotted thintail (Meliscaeva auricollis), a slender European hoverfly (family Syrphidae) that is a true marvel of seasonal adaptation.
