While adults feed entirely on nectar and pollen—favoring white umbellifers, brambles, ragwort, and thistles—their offspring are fierce predators. The larvae hunt arboreal aphids high up in trees and shrubs like oak, pine, apple, and elder. Recognizing their larvae’s appetite for these sap-sucking pests, females strategically deposit their eggs directly near aphid colonies, making the species an invaluable natural pest controller for forest ecosystems. Though active from April through November with a population peak in late summer, they can be spotted hovering along sunny woodland borders throughout the warmer months. During my bicycle tour along the eastern coast of Sweden in June 2026, I crossed paths with these stunning hoverflies during my rest breaks at forest edges, capturing some of the finest photos of my entire trip.

The banded thintail (Meliscaeva cinctella) is a slim, elegant hoverfly easily recognized by its unusually narrow abdomen and long
