En Suecia se le conoce con el acertado nombre local de myrs\u00e4ckbagge (&#8220;escarabajo saco de las hormigas&#8221;) debido a su asombroso y enga\u00f1oso ciclo de vida. Las larvas construyen estuches r\u00edgidos y port\u00e1tiles con sus propios excrementos y detritos, retray\u00e9ndose en su interior ante cualquier amenaza. Incre\u00edblemente, habitan dentro de los nidos de las agresivas hormigas rojas de la madera (<em>Formica<\/em>). Al recubrir sus estuches con se\u00f1ales qu\u00edmicas que imitan el olor exacto de la colonia, las larvas enga\u00f1an a las hormigas para que las cuiden como si fueran su propia prole, llegando incluso a trasladarlas si el hormiguero se muda. Protegidas en el coraz\u00f3n del nido, las larvas se alimentan de restos vegetales antes de pupar en sus refugios. Los adultos emergen con un tama\u00f1o de 7 a 11 mm y unos llamativos \u00e9litros de color rojo amarillento adornados con exactamente cuatro puntos negros. Es entonces cuando abandonan a sus involuntarios hu\u00e9spedes subterr\u00e1neos para alimentarse de las hojas tiernas y brotes de sauces, robles y abedules.
