Commonly found near streams and damp woodlands across Europe, these flies sport extraordinarily long legs that lift their bodies high above the forest floor\u2014a clever adaptation that helps them stay cool in hot, humid microclimates. To deter predators, they frequently perform a specialized leg-waving dance that convincingly mimics the movements of a stinging wasp or an alert ant. Despite their gangly posture, adults measure a modest 7 to 8 millimeters and are fierce, active predators. They hunt down tiny, soft-bodied insects like aphids and supplement their diet with sweet honeydew, while their subterranean larvae act as vital decomposers, feeding on decaying fungi and rotting plant matter.
