This species is easily recognized by its widened, feather-like white legs, which play a central role in a fascinating aerial courtship display. While most damselflies tuck their legs tightly against their bodies for aerodynamic efficiency during flight, the males of this species intentionally dangle their broad, chalky-white legs beneath them in mid-air to signal rivals and entice mates. They possess a distinctly wider head than other blue damselflies, with males sporting a pale blue abdomen and females wearing a more subdued, yellowish-green palette. Preferring slow-flowing, heavily vegetated waters, they are right at home along marshy banks. I encountered this beautiful female at a riverside campsite in Finland, sharing the exact same patch of shoreline with two other distinct damselfly species on the very same morning.
