The males are a masterclass in iridescence, flashing metallic blue bodies and broad, ink-dark wing bands, while the females radiate a brilliant emerald green. Breaking the rules of typical odonate flight, these giants do not dart in sharp, aggressive bursts; instead, they possess a delicate, fluttering, butterfly-like flight. Males fiercely defend prime river territory, performing elaborate aerial dances with half-open wings to court arriving females. If the display is successful, the pair locks into a classic, circular mating “wheel.” The female then utilizes her precision ovipositor to inject her eggs directly into the stems of submerged plants, where the aquatic nymphs will develop for up to two years. During an early morning walk at my riverside campsite in Finland, this magnificent female damselfly was the third and final damselfly species I caught on camera\u2014standing out as the largest, most dramatic, and undisputed crown jewel of the morning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Meet the banded demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens), a breathtakingly large damselfly that
