Muy vinculada a h\u00e1bitats h\u00famedos y pantanosos, esta especie pr\u00f3spera en turberas \u00e1cidas, matorrales h\u00famedos y brezales de vaguada. Las hembras suelen elegir el barro pisoteado por el ganado o la turba empapada en los m\u00e1rgenes del agua para depositar sus huevos. En el sustrato acu\u00e1tico, las larvas se alimentan de materia org\u00e1nica en descomposici\u00f3n y microorganismos. Los adultos vuelan desde abril hasta octubre \u2014con su pico de abundancia en torno al mes de julio\u2014 y visitan con frecuencia una gran variedad de flores para alimentarse de n\u00e9ctar y polen.
