Originally classified within the broad genus <em>Sapromyza<\/em>, <em>Sapromyzosoma<\/em> was established as a subgenus (and is sometimes treated as a distinct genus) by Italian entomologist Vittore Lioy in 1864. Mature larvae of species like <em>Sapromyzosoma quadricincta <\/em>are unusually soft and dorsoventrally flattened, allowing them to maneuver easily through tight crevices in leaf litter. First-instar larvae possess a dense array of over 60 scraping cirri arranged in specialized rows to feed on microscopic organic layers, while their tiny eggs feature a distinct micropylar pole equipped with a star-like collar and specialized aeropyles for respiration. I encountered this tiny fly resting on leaves, patiently posing for an extended photography session in a small woodland just a few blocks from my home in Barkarby,
