Se reconoce f\u00e1cilmente por una llamativa franja amarilla en el abdomen y manchas oscuras en las alas. A pesar de su apariencia de abejorro, es un insecto totalmente inofensivo que carece de aguij\u00f3n. Los adultos se alimentan del n\u00e9ctar y polen de flores blancas como la zarza, sa\u00faco y perejil. Durante los d\u00edas soleados, los machos territoriales permanecen suspendidos en el aire bajo los rayos de luz en los senderos forestales para ahuyentar a sus rivales. Distinguir el sexo de esta especie es sencillo: los ojos de los machos se tocan en la parte superior de la cabeza, mientras que los de las hembras est\u00e1n claramente separados. El aspecto m\u00e1s misterioso de su biolog\u00eda ocurre en escondido. Las audaces hembras se infiltran en los avisperos subterr\u00e1neos de avispas sociales para poner sus huevos. A\u00fan no se comprende del todo c\u00f3mo logran burlar las defensas sin ser atacadas. Una vez que las larvas eclosionan, viven en el fondo del nido aliment\u00e1ndose de detritos, desechos y avispas muertas.
