Etiology of measles suspect cases reported in 2006-2007 in Poland

The article examines patients suspected for measles and referred for testing, reported in Poland during 2009–2010. It aimed to identify which viruses—other than measles—were responsible for these symptoms. We analysed blood samples from suspected cases and found that many of such cases were actually caused by other viruses, such as rubella, parvovirus B19, Epstein-Barr virus, and human herpesvirus, rather than measles itself. The study highlighted that age and vaccination status influenced which virus was detected: measles was more common in young children and unvaccinated adults, while rubella and parvovirus B19 were more frequent in school-aged children and those vaccinated against measles. The findings suggested that Poland was nearing the elimination phase for measles but continued testing for multiple viruses was important to improve disease surveillance and accurately track progress toward elimination.

This investigation was initiated by colleagues from the virology laboratory at the Polish National Institute of Public Health. Although the analysis was straightforward, it was highly valuable for documenting progress toward measles elimination. During the elimination phase, most patients presenting with rash symptoms test negative for measles, making it essential to identify other pathogens that can cause similar clinical presentations. At the time, there was widespread optimism that measles could soon be eliminated in Europe. Unfortunately, in the following decades the situation deteriorated, with measles re‑emerging largely due to declining vaccination coverage and increased international travel.
