We summarised the epidemiology of meningococcal meningitis in Poland from 1970 to 2006 and observed that the incidence decreased steadily until the early 2000s, likely due to fewer births and improved healthcare, but then increased again, especially among teenagers. Most cases were caused by group B meningococci, though group C became more common in recent years. We found that infants and young children were most affected, and the disease showed seasonal peaks in winter. Our surveillance system improved over time, but diagnostic certainty and vaccine uptake remained challenging. We concluded that further efforts are needed to enhance laboratory confirmation, increase vaccination, and better assess the burden of meningococcal disease in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Together with two students from the Medical University, we conducted a thorough analysis of case records reported to the national surveillance system over a 37\u2011year period. The students also helped digitize paper forms archived at the Polish institute, laying the groundwork for later improvements in surveillance procedures. This investigation marked the beginning of my work on invasive bacterial diseases.
