This study evaluated 75 patients with focal involuntary muscle contractions (focal dystonias) who received repeated injections of botulinum toxin type A over a five-year period. The treatment proved highly safe and effective, yielding substantial or moderate symptom improvement in over 91% of all injection sessions. We observed the best results in patients with involuntary eyelid twitches and facial spasms. Crucially, the medication’s effectiveness did not diminish with repeated treatments, and side effects\u2014such as temporary eyelid drooping or localized muscle weakness\u2014were generally mild and resolved entirely on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was my very first scientific publication in a peer-reviewed journal, stemming from a student project. For 12 months, I assisted Prof. Andrzej Friedman at his outpatient clinic for movement disorders, which received patient referrals from all over the country. I built a comprehensive database tracking clinic visits for patients with focal dystonias, meticulously recording the clinical effects of botulinum toxin administration\u2014the only effective treatment available for them.
