Aerial ambush: Meeting the robber flies of the Andean highland

Robber flies (Asilidae) are the ultimate aerial predators of the insect world. These robust, bristly hunters excel at intercepting other insects mid-air, seizing their prey on the wing and delivering a near-instantaneous, fatal strike with a short, sturdy proboscis. They inject a powerful saliva that rapidly paralyzes the victim and liquefies its insides, allowing the fly to calmly consume its meal. I crossed paths with this impressive, large individual (likely Laphria flavescens) and witnessed a stunning display of dexterity: it was anchoring itself to a branch using just a single leg, while its remaining limbs were wrapped tightly around its prey. It wasn’t until I reviewed the shot on my computer, however, that I noticed a fascinating hidden detail—a few tiny parasites, most likely mites, attached to the fly’s furry torso.
