Rainieria antennaepes is a captivating stilt-legged fly (Micropezidae) native to North America, whose range stretches all the way down into Central and South America. This insect is famous for its theatrical wasp mimicry, earning its species name—which literally translates to “antenna foot”. It constantly waves its white-tipped front legs in the air to perfectly imitate the twitching antennae of a cautious wasp. Because their legs are so incredibly long and delicate, these flies are uniquely adapted to a “high-wire” lifestyle. Instead of walking flat on open ground, they step gingerly along leaf edges and thin twigs, keeping their bodies elevated safely above any predators crawling below. Despite their aggressive look, both the adults and larvae are harmless decomposers and scavengers, quietly breaking down leaf detritus, dung, and bird droppings to harvest their nutrients. I crossed paths with one of these surprisingly cute fly in a city park in Puyo, on the lush, vibrant edge of Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest.
