Shadow hunters of Athens: Meeting the robber fly Engelepogon

Robber flies, also known as assassin flies (Asilidae), are formidable aerial hunters. Using specialized, spiny legs, they snatch passing prey—including wasps, flies, and damselflies—mid-air, injecting a paralyzing, enzyme-rich saliva that liquefies their victim’s insides. The genus Engelepogon is an uncommon group established in 1992 by Russian dipterologist P. A. Lehr. These flies thrive in warm, arid, or Mediterranean habitats, frequently perching on rocks, sandy soil, or low foliage to scan for targets. I spotted this impressive fly perched on an olive tree in the botanical garden of Athens, actively feeding on a bee. With the shaded garden creating a naturally dark background, I managed to capture a few stunning shots!
