Beetles of the genus Chalepus are fascinating members of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae), often celebrated for their striking, heavily textured, and wedge-shaped bodies. Distributed widely across North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean, these insects possess an incredible life cycle tied closely to their host plants. The larvae are specialized “leaf miners”—after hatching, they burrow directly into the narrow space between the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf, eating the nutrient-rich plant tissue from the inside out and leaving behind distinct, hollowed-out trails. While most species are harmless, well-behaved components of their native ecosystems, a few have gained notoriety among farmers as agricultural pests due to their appetite for commercial crops like maize and various legumes. I crossed paths with this remarkable little leaf miner while exploring the lush city park of Puyo, a vibrant town nestled in the Amazon region of Ecuador.
