The agricultural outlaw: Spotting Metamasius sericeus in the heart of Ecuador

The silky cane weevil (Metamasius sericeus) is a fascinating yet destructive tropical beetle from the true weevil family (Curculionidae). Native to Central and South America, this species has become infamous for unintentionally stowing away on international fruit shipments, popping up in ports worldwide from Australia and West Africa to the United States and Greece. These adaptable beetles primarily target stressed or damaged plants, showing a strong preference for ripe or decomposing fruits like mangoes and pineapples, as well as banana stalks, sugarcane, and ornamental palms. Because they reproduce rapidly, they can inflict devastating economic damage on agricultural industries. I encountered this mischievous beetle in the protected rainforest of “La Perla” in La Concordia,  Ecuador—during two consecutive visits in 2024 and 2025.
