The tribe Eustylini is a primarily Neotropical group of broad-nosed weevils belonging to the subfamily Entiminae. They are celebrated among nature photographers and entomologists for their stunning, often iridescent coloration. While the adults spend their lives grazing visibly on tropical foliage, their subterranean larvae develop out of sight, feeding on plant roots. Several species within this tribe are considered highly destructive agricultural pests. I suspect this particular broad-nosed specimen belongs to this tribe, though I am not entirely certain of its exact genus. I crossed paths with it while exploring the “La Perla” Protected Forest, a thriving sanctuary that serves as a living reminder of the vast tropical forests that covered the entire coast of Ecuador in ancient times.
