Pests, protectors, and plant pickiness: Getting to know the Altica flea beetles

The genus Altica is a massive, nearly cosmopolitan group of flea beetles within the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae), comprising well over 300 known species. Both adults and larvae are strict herbivores (phytophagous), often specializing on a single plant species. Because many Altica species look virtually identical, identifying them in the field relies heavily on recognizing their specific host plant—whether that be grapes, blueberries, or willowherbs. For a definitive identification, a qualified entomologist must examine the unique shape of their genitalia under a microscope. While some species are notorious pests in crops and vineyards, others are championed as biological control agents to curb invasive weeds like thistles. True to their flea beetle lineage, they utilize hyper-developed hind legs equipped with a specialized internal spring mechanism to launch themselves away from danger. I crossed paths with this beautiful, metallic flea beetle in the La Perla protected forest on the Ecuadorian coast, but managed to capture only a single good frame before it triggered its ejection seat.
