Palpada ruficeps is a striking species of Neotropical hoverfly (family Syrphidae) native to Central and South America. Like many flower flies, these insects are highly specialized pollinators that mimic stinging bumblebees, though they are completely harmless to humans. True to their name, hoverflies are famous for their remarkable ability to suspend themselves perfectly still in mid-air before darting away in the blink of an eye. In the Palpada genus, males use this precise hovering behavior as a territorial display to attract females and ward off rivals. While many hoverfly larvae crawl on plants to hunt aphids, Palpada larvae are aquatic filter-feeders that thrive in highly stagnant, organic-rich water. Because their environment is nearly devoid of oxygen, they have evolved a telescoping, snorkel-like “tail” that allows them to breathe air from the water’s surface while remaining submerged in the sludge. Ultimately, these flower flies are essential pollinators crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems. This impressive specimen was generous enough to let me take a few photos in the protected forest of La Perla on the coast of Ecuador.
