Meet the brown willow beetle (Galerucella lineola), a small, 4-to-6-millimeter leaf beetle with an outsized ecological impact. Both the adults and their caterpillar-like larvae are voracious leaf-chewers, aggressively gnawing holes in willow, alder, and hazel trees, and easily defoliating entire branches. Because willows are widely cultivated across Northern Europe and North America as renewable biomass energy crops, these tiny insects are considered economically significant pests. A single female can lay up to 400 eggs, and upon hatching, the larvae immediately target fresh buds and leaves before eventually pupating in the soil. These beetles are tightly anchored to humid, wet, and sunny wetland environments; the delicate, newly hatched larvae are highly vulnerable to drying out, forcing the species to stick to moist habitats even if the food quality is lower than in drier zones. When cornered by predators like ladybirds, they deploy chemical warfare, secreting volatile aldehydes from specialized glands to save themselves. During my long-distance cycling tour along the coasts of Sweden and Finland in June 2026, I crossed paths with these naughty beetles several times, even catching them mid-copulation on their favorite foliage.
