Huge wings for a micro body: The aerial mastery of Minettia longipennis

Meet Minettia longipennis, a tiny Palearctic lauxaniid fly renowned for its striking contrast: a glossy, pitch-black body paired with disproportionately large, orange-tinted wings. Measuring a mere 3 to 4.5 millimeters, these adults are miniature aerial acrobats, utilizing their unique wing geometry to pull off astonishingly precise in-flight maneuvers. Unlike typical flies that flock to decaying animal matter, the larvae of this species are dedicated fungivores, quietly developing among the fungi growing within damp leaf litter or nesting in organic debris like bird nests. The adults are common fixtures of broad-leaved woodlands, bushes, and hedgerows, reaching their population peak in June but remaining active from May through September. I spotted this fascinating micro-fly resting quietly on the foliage right at a Swedish campsite. Its oversized wings glistening under the canopy made it an irresistible photographic target.
